Chelsea Physic Garden: How to Visit London's Oldest Botanic Garden

Updated: Sep 28
Have you ever walked past a high brick wall on the Chelsea Embankment and wondered what was behind it?
Behind it is Chelsea Physic Garden, four acres of medicinal, useful and rare plants, founded in 1673. I went on 27 April 2024, the day of its spring plant fair, and the photos here are from that visit.
This is how to visit, what to look for, and the events that bring people back through the year.

What Is Chelsea Physic Garden?
A walled botanic garden between the King's Road and the Thames. The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries leased the land in 1673 as an outdoor classroom, where apprentices learned to identify medicinal plants.
It has been an independent charity since 1983 and opened to the public in 1987. It holds more than 4,500 plants, and it is Grade I on Historic England's Register of Parks and Gardens.
Why Does Chelsea Physic Garden Pay Rent of £5 a Year?
Because of Sir Hans Sloane, who bought the manor of Chelsea. In 1722 he let the garden to the Apothecaries for £5 a year in perpetuity, on condition that it stayed a physic garden.
His statue stands in the middle of the garden. It is a copy; Rysbrack's marble original is in the British Museum. Sloane's collections, left to the nation, founded the British Museum too.
What Is There to See in Chelsea Physic Garden?
The Garden of Medicinal Plants is the heart of it, arranged by what the plants treat. The Garden of Edible and Useful Plants covers food, dyes and fibres, and the World Woodland Garden has trees from around the world.
Look for the Pond Rockery of 1773, thought to be the oldest rock garden in Europe. It is built from volcanic stone brought back from Iceland by Joseph Banks, mixed with old stone from the Tower of London.

The garden says its olive tree is the largest outdoor fruiting olive in Britain, sheltered by the walls and the river. The glasshouses were finished in 1902, and they hold cacti, succulents and tender plants.

What Events Are There at Chelsea Physic Garden Through the Year?
In spring, the Plant Festival fills the garden with more than 30 plant stalls for a day. In 2026 it was on Saturday 2 May, from 10am to 5pm, for £5. When I went in 2024 it was still called the Plant Fair, and the tulips were at their best.
In summer there are lawn concerts on June and July evenings, supper clubs, and late openings on Wednesdays in August.
In autumn the garden holds a free Open Weekend as part of the Chelsea History Festival, with pond dipping and crafts. In 2026 it falls on 3 and 4 October.
In late November the Christmas Fair brings more than 100 stalls, with timed tickets; in 2026 it runs from 26 to 29 November. Talks, tours and workshops run all year, and the full list is on the garden's What's On page.
When Is Chelsea Physic Garden Open?
From Sunday to Friday, 11am to 5pm, with last entry at 4.30pm. It is closed on Saturdays except for events. Winter hours are shorter, so check before going between November and March.
How Much Does Chelsea Physic Garden Cost?
In 2026 an adult ticket cost £15 with a Gift Aid donation or £13.50 without. Ages 5 to 25 and some concessions paid £6.50 or £5, and under-5s went free.
Historic Houses members get in free, and National Rail's 2-for-1 offer applies. Events like the Plant Festival and the Christmas Fair have their own tickets.
What Else Is Near Chelsea Physic Garden?
The King's Road is five minutes north. Chelsea's front doors are some of the best in London at Christmas, and I have a guide to Christmas wreaths in London.
In May, Chelsea in Bloom turns the shops into flower displays. In winter, the Ever After Garden lit up Duke of York Square in 2025. For more flowers, Columbia Road Flower Market is on Sundays.
